At George Long Elementary, we have started a Student Council. Having a Student Council at the elementary level presents a unique opportunity for our students to learn organization, leadership and teamwork skills. Students also have the advantage of being agents for change in their elementary school (with support from teachers and administration) by being a part of the Student Council. The Student Council will also prepare them for later student government positions as they continue to grow in Grass Lake Schools.
Student Council is run by third, fourth, and fifth grade students under the leadership of the 3-5 principal, Ms. Evenson. There are various Student Council positions, and each position comes with its own set of responsibilities. A third thru fifth grade election was held to select a student for each Student Council position and then we also included students from each classroom to be representatives.
President (5th grader)— Represents the entire student body, as well as the entire Student Council. The president, in conjunction with the principal, is responsible for running council meetings and is in charge of organizing all Student Council activities.
Vice president (4th grader)— Represents the student body and Student Council when the president is not able to do so.
Secretary (3rd grader) — Responsible for keeping notes, or minutes, regarding each council meeting.
We had our first meeting on October 26th. During this meeting, we defined leadership and identified leadership traits that are most important to us. We discussed how we would like to end the month of October and one to two things that we could do in the month of November to build our leadership capacity in the building. As we continue to meet monthly, we will vote to determine ideas that we think are most important and then use these ideas to create a strong vision.
The goal for our Student Council is to organize fun activities for students and provide community service. The Elementary Student Council is looking forward to an exciting year!
