Superintendent's Message
Dear Grass Lake Community Schools Families, Staff, and Community Members,
As I complete my first year as Superintendent of Grass Lake Community Schools, I want to extend my thanks to each of you for the incredible support, collaboration, and trust you’ve shown me throughout this past year. It has been an honor to serve this vibrant, dedicated, and caring community- we are small, but we are mighty! Our theme for the 24-25 school year was to “Tell our Grass Lake Community Schools Story” and we have done so by celebrating our successes- frankly the GLCS has been everywhere this year. You can’t miss us!
Together, we’ve accomplished so much in a short amount of time. I am proud to share a few highlights that demonstrate the strength and spirit of Grass Lake:
Student Achievement: We continued to see growth in academic performance across multiple grade levels, thanks to the hard work of our students, teachers, and support staff. Next year we are offering more AP classes at the high school, offering a double literacy block for our 6th graders at the middle school while adding Art classes and enhancing our elective rotation at the elementary school.
Facility Improvements: Investments in our buildings and grounds enhances both safety and the learning environment, ensuring our students have spaces they can be proud of. This will be a major focus for our work during the 25-26 school year. We have engaged in a yearlong study and assessment of our infrastructure, buildings and technology and we will be presenting this road map to the community shortly.
Community Engagement: We strengthened partnerships with local organizations and increased opportunities for parents and community members to engage in the life of our schools. I am excited to announce a partnership with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department to employ a School Resource Officer (SRO) next year. Our aim is to ensure safe schools for all Warriors.
Staff Support and Development: We launched new professional development initiatives and expanded collaboration opportunities to support our incredible educators and staff. Next year we will be focusing on student engagement, curriculum alignment and enhancing our assessment approaches.
Strategic Planning: We began a long-term strategic planning process (more of a reworking and gap analysis) focused on academic excellence, student well-being, and responsible stewardship of community assets. We have been efficient with our community resources and maintained a fiscally responsible budget and have planned well heading into next year. I am excited to announce that our strategic plan goals have been met up to this point and we are fine tuning our vision to ensure we are meeting the direction of our school moving forward. We are “Rooted and Rising” in the GLCS.
Student Opportunities: We expanded extracurricular offerings at George Long, the Middle School and the High School, helping students discover and pursue their passions beyond the classroom. We value the development of the whole Warrior.
These successes are only possible because of the collaborative effort of our students, families, staff, Board of Education, and community partners. Your commitment to our schools and your belief in the power of public education have made a lasting impact. It takes a village still matters here and we need to lean into this to continue to be the premier school district in Jackson County.
As we look ahead, I remain committed to ensuring that every student in Grass Lake has access to a high-quality education. I’m excited for what the future holds and am grateful to continue this journey with you.
Thank you once again for a wonderful first year. I am proud to be a Warrior!

GLCS Family,
In the coming days and weeks, you’ll likely hear about the first-of-its-kind Statewide School Facilities Study. I’d like to tell you a little about this historic study that the GLCS Participated in, and how it may be a useful tool as part of our continued efforts to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for all Warriors.
This state-funded study, approved by the Michigan Legislature in 2022, determined the actual cost for all Michigan traditional K-12 school buildings to meet basic health, safety and wellness standards. In 2023, educators statewide formed the nonprofit School Finance Research Foundation to oversee the study. The Foundation study builds on the 2018 School Finance Research Collaborative study, which for the first time determined the true cost to educate a Michigan student.
The Statewide School Facilities Study provides district-level costs for each school evaluated to meet basic facility standards. This study only provides costs for meeting basic standards for things like HVAC, roofing, electrical, and plumbing. In short, the behind the scenes items that keep our district running- this is not a secret, our facilities our beautiful but need some attention. The study does not include administrative, athletic, playground or transportation facilities, additions, renovations or remodeling, or replacing things like sidewalks or technology.
This was an extensive, statewide review of over 2,500 buildings over a two-year period. The report is an audit that lets us determine what we need to address to make to ensure our students continue to have a safe place to learn, grow and thrive. Overall, the goal is for the Statewide School Facilities Study to become an essential part of the ongoing school funding discussion at the state and local levels.
This study paired with our Interim Facility Assessment as conducted and presented by Kingscott, to our School Board in the Fall, will provide the blueprint for our district needs moving forward. At a Board meeting later this year, members of our strategic planning team will present to the Board a district “Master Plan” which will serve as a roadmap for our district facility efforts and project our needs over the next decade or so.
As a district, we’ll work with our school board, staff and community to determine how we might utilize these roadmaps to help us continue to provide a safe, healthy learning environment that prepares our students for success and careers. Have a restful Spring Break!
With continued enthusiasm,
Dr. Nick Angel, Proud Superintendent

Grass Lake Community Schools Family,
I am excited to announce that we have recently received correspondence from our friends at Jackson Magazine. In the interest of “Telling Our Story”, I wanted to share this recognition with our community. The following teachers from the Grass Lake Community Schools have been formally selected as part of the Top Ten in Jackson Magazine's 2025 Top Teachers program:
· Dakota Bahlau – George Long Elementary
· Courtney Byers – Grass Lake High School
· Jennifer Taylor – George Long Elementary
Each year, Jackson Magazine celebrates the exceptional educators in Jackson County who demonstrate unwavering commitment to our area’s youth through the Top Teachers program. Through a committee-led selection process, outstanding teachers are recognized as the Top 10 Teachers in Jackson County. From this group, the Top Five Teachers are chosen, and one is awarded the prestigious title of Teacher of the Year. The next phase of the program involves hosting two Classroom Observations for each of the top ten teachers. Dakota, Courtney and Jennifer will be honored in the May issue of Jackson Magazine and celebrated at the Top Teachers Award Ceremony on May 6.
Thanks to a partnership with the Jackson Community Foundation (JCF), the Hurst Foundation, and the Patricia Stinson Trosin Endowment Fund at JCF, the 2025 Teacher of the Year will receive a $5,000 award. The remaining four teachers in the Top 5 will each receive a $1,000 grant for use in their classroom and/or for professional development.
We could not be more proud of our staff and these three exemplify what makes our schools a special place. They are student centered teachers who are passionate about helping children be the best version of themselves.
Proud Superintendent,
Dr. Nicholas Angel
Grass Lake Community Schools Family,
As we approach the colder months, we want to remind you of our procedures for notifying families about inclement weather that may impact school operations, including closures, delays, or early dismissals.
The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. In the event of inclement weather, our team carefully monitors weather conditions and works closely with local authorities to make decisions about school schedules.
Notification Process
If changes to the school schedule are necessary, we will inform families as soon as possible using the following methods:
Automated Calls
Families will receive a phone call from the school district. Please ensure your contact information is up-to-date in our records.
Email Communication
An email will be sent to all parents and guardians with detailed information.
Website and Mobile App
Updates will be posted on the school website
Social Media
Follow us on Facebook and X/Twitter for the latest updates.
Local Media
We will notify local TV and radio stations to broadcast school closure or delay information.
Key Considerations
Timing of Decisions: Decisions regarding closures or delays will typically be made by 5:30am to allow families time to plan. When information is available the night before, we will take this into consideration and communicate accordingly.
After-School Activities: Updates about extracurricular activities and events will be shared separately if needed. No Elementary or Middle School events will take place on an inclement weather day. High School athletics/events status will be announced later that day with a goal of communicating by noon.
Emergency Dismissals: If weather conditions worsen during the school day, we may need to dismiss students early. Please ensure your child knows their emergency dismissal plan.
We encourage all families to review their own plans for childcare, transportation, and other arrangements in the event of weather-related schedule changes. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work together to ensure the safety and well-being of our school community.
With Warrior Pride,
Dr. Nicholas Angel- Superintendent

Grass Lake Schools Family,
I am honored to introduce myself as the new Superintendent of Schools. Although I do not start officially until July 1, I have been in the district all week. It is with great enthusiasm that I join this esteemed district and embark on this journey together with each of you.
First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude for the warm welcome I have received since my arrival. The sense of community and commitment to education that I have witnessed already is truly inspiring. I am eager to collaborate with all stakeholders—students, parents, teachers, staff, and community members—to continue fostering an environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
My background in education spans over 21 years with 16 serving in school leadership positions, during which I have had the privilege of serving in various roles that have shaped my approach to leadership and learning. I am deeply committed to educational excellence and honoring our community’s traditions. These values will guide my work as we strive to provide the best possible educational experiences for all our students.
I believe in the power of collaboration and open communication. As we move forward, I am eager to listen to your perspectives, ideas, and aspirations for our schools. Together, we will build on our strengths and tackle any challenges that may arise, always keeping the best interests of our students at the forefront of our efforts.
Please know that my door is always open, and I welcome your input and feedback. I am dedicated to transparency and accountability as we work together to achieve our shared goals for our schools and our community.
